Columbus Students Visit Utica Curling Club

The ice was smooth, the competition was friendly and the learning curve was steep! Recently,
the 5th and 6th grade students from Columbus Elementary stepped out of the classroom and
onto the ice at the historic Utica Curling Club for an unforgettable hands on introduction to the
sport of curling.

Throughout the visit, students explored the unique physics and athleticism required for the
"Roaring Game." The young athletes focused first on the delivery, learning the balance and
precision needed to successfully slide a 42-pound granite stone toward the "house." From there,
they moved on to the science of sweeping, where they discovered how vigorous movement
creates friction to melt the ice, allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter. Perhaps most
importantly, the students practiced communication and strategic thinking, working together as a
cohesive unit to decide where to place stones to outmaneuver their opponents and score points.

This enriching experience would not have been possible without the incredible hospitality and
expertise of the volunteers at the Utica Curling Club. We would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank
You" to the entire staff, with a special shout-out to Bill, Sam, Julia, Sue, and Mary Ellen. Their
patience, enthusiasm, and deep knowledge of the game made our students feel incredibly
welcome. Thank you for opening your doors and sharing your passion for this historic sport with
the next generation!
